Applicants who are eligible to migrate independently to Australia need to apply through Subclass 189 General Skilled Migration (GSM), visa stream. This visa attracts relatively young and highly skilled migrants who meet the criteria of the points system. The minimum score for subclass 189 is 60 points in the points assessment, in the areas of age, occupational skills, work experience, academic qualifications and English language ability.
Applicants residing in Australia must hold a ‘Bridging visa’ A, B or C or a substantive visa. Applicants in this category must be able to demonstrate that they have the skills/qualifications in an occupation listed on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL). Applications are subject to an assessment by a relevant authority. English language ability must also be assessed by various English language testing systems. (Unless they hold an eligible passport).
